Program Runs March 1, 2024 - May 1, 2024
Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center is proud to announce its selection by the Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) to participate in the state’s innovative “Throwing Shade” program. This program aims to promote the use of native trees and shrubs by offering customer discounts on eligible plants.
“Throwing Shade VA” seeks to encourage the purchase of native species of trees and shrubs, which are better adapted to Virginia’s natural environment and provide numerous environmental benefits. As a participant in the program, Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center will offer a $25 discount on eligible trees and shrubs valued at $50 or more.
“We are thrilled to be chosen by the Virginia Department of Forestry to take part in the ‘Throwing Shade’ program,” said Craig Johnson, Vice President at Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to promoting sustainable landscaping practices and providing our customers with high-quality native plants.”
Native plants offer several advantages over ornamental species, including enhanced environmental benefits and support for local wildlife, particularly essential pollinators. By purchasing native trees and shrubs through the “Throwing Shade” program, customers can contribute to the conservation of Virginia’s natural resources while beautifying their landscapes.
Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center is one of only 10 nurseries State wide in this program and the only one nearby to Charlottesville, Staunton or Harrisonburg areas. The initiative is funded through state water quality improvement funds, which the DOF is utilizing to reimburse participating nurseries for the discounts offered to customers.
