Spring Planting Guide: How to Care for Your New Fruit Trees
So, you’ve picked out the perfect fruit trees from Waynesboro Landscape & Garden Center—now what? Proper planting and care are key to ensuring they thrive and produce fruit for years to come.
1. Pick the Right Spot
Fruit trees need
full sun—at least 6-8 hours per day. Choose a spot with well-draining soil and plenty of space for the tree to grow.
2. Planting Your Tree
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper.
- Remove the tree from its container and gently loosen the roots.
- Place it in the hole, ensuring the graft union (the swollen area near the base) is above the soil line.
- Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and add mulch around the base (but not against the trunk).
3. Watering & Care
- Water deeply once or twice a week, especially during dry periods.
- Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer.
4. Pollination & Pairing
Some trees, like
Quad Apple and Quad Cherry, are
self-pollinating, meaning they don’t need a second tree to bear fruit. Others, like peaches and plums, will benefit from having another variety nearby to increase yield.
5. Protecting Your Trees
- Use tree guards or fencing to prevent damage from deer and rodents.
- Keep an eye out for pests or diseases and treat them early.
