Why Your Mulch Might Be Hurting Your Plants and How to Fix It

Mulch is one of the most useful tools in your garden—when used correctly. It conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, and gives your beds a polished, finished look. But did you know that improper mulching could actually be harming your plants?

At Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center, we often help homeowners fix common mulching mistakes. Let’s take a look at how mulch might be doing more harm than good—and what you can do to correct it.

Common Mulching Mistakes

1. Mulch Volcanoes Around Trees

You’ve probably seen it—a big mound of mulch piled high around the trunk of a tree. This is known as a “mulch volcano,” and while it might look tidy, it can lead to rot, pests, and even tree death. Tree trunks need airflow, and mulch that’s too close can trap moisture against the bark.

Fix it: Keep mulch 3–6 inches away from the base of trees and shrubs, and spread it evenly in a flat, doughnut-shaped ring about 2–3 inches deep.

2. Using Too Much Mulch

A thick layer of mulch may seem like a good idea, but piling it on too deep can smother your plants’ roots and prevent water and air from reaching the soil.

Fix it: Stick to about 2–3 inches of mulch for flower beds and landscaped areas. This is enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without suffocating your plants.

3. Using the Wrong Type of Mulch

Not all mulches are created equal. Inorganic mulches like rubber or dyed wood chips can look attractive but may not break down naturally or improve soil health. Some cheaper dyed mulches can even contain harmful chemicals.

Fix it: Choose natural mulches like double-shredded hardwood mulch, pine bark, or leaf mold. These organic materials enrich the soil as they decompose and are safe for plants and the environment.

4. Neglecting to Refresh or Replace Old Mulch

Over time, mulch breaks down and can become compacted, preventing water from soaking in. It can also start to harbor pests or mold if not maintained.

Fix it: Fluff or turn your mulch once or twice a season, and top it off annually to maintain the right depth and fresh appearance.
